Johnny Depp tried his hand as a filmmaker before becoming the world-famous Jack Sparrow with The Brave, which was never shown to the public. Because the film was not distributed in theaters in the United States, it was shown at International Film Festivals. Few people are aware that the 1997 picture made and starring Depp was a major financial endeavor and fiasco, yet it was a dark hidden treasure in his career.
He lost roughly $2 million on the picture since he committed to pay for more than a quarter of the budget out of his own pocket. In the mid-1990s, he was requested to take a seat behind the camera in the director’s chair to try his hand at filmmaking for the film The Brave. However, the response was not what he had hoped for.
Johnny Depp opted not to release the film because of the negative response. The film also included significant celebrities like Marlon Brando, Marshall Bell, Elpida Carrillo, and Luis Guzmán. However, when asked about the film’s negative reaction at the Cannes Film Festival, a saddened Depp remarked, “They just f*cking destroyed us,” according to The Things.
In response to the harsh criticism, the POTC actor opted not to release his directorial first feature picture in the United States. “It was like an attack on me – how dare I direct a movie?” the actor remarked, noting that the film was never officially released. Following the positive reception at Cannes, the film got a limited distribution in France, but the reviews were so negative that Depp refused to distribute it in the United States.
Johnny Depp even said that it was one of the most difficult things he had ever done, which ripped him to tears because he felt compelled to do this film. However, after a significant disappointment with his directorial debut, he will return behind the camera for his second directorial feature with Modigliani to bring the life and work of the Italian artist, Amedeo Modigliani, to the big screen.
