Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

New Zealand's primary temporary work visa for overseas nationals. A 3-stage process ensures employers are accredited, the job is genuine, and the worker meets requirements. Median wage threshold increased to NZD $35.00/hour from 9 March 2026.

Three-Stage Process

1

Employer Accreditation

The employer must be accredited by Immigration New Zealand before they can hire overseas workers.

  • Standard accreditation: up to 5 migrant workers
  • High-volume accreditation: 6+ migrant workers
  • Must demonstrate: legitimate business, financial sustainability, compliance with NZ employment law, no immigration/employment breaches
2

Job Check

Confirms the role is genuine and no suitable New Zealand citizens or residents are available for the position.

  • The role must be genuine and at a market-rate salary
  • Employer must advertise the role and demonstrate recruitment efforts to hire locally first
  • Median wage test applies: position must pay at or above the immigration median wage
3

Work Visa Application

The worker applies for the AEWV with the job offer from the accredited employer after the job check is approved.

  • Qualifications: Level 4+ on NZ Qualifications Framework, or equivalent experience
  • Skills must match the field/industry of the job offered
  • Health and character requirements must be met
  • English language requirements for certain roles

FAQ

What is the AEWV median wage threshold?
From 9 March 2026, the immigration median wage is NZD $35.00/hour. Jobs must pay at or above this threshold. The minimum wage (NZD $23.95/hour from April 2026) is separate and lower.
Can I change employers on an AEWV?
The AEWV is tied to a specific employer. If you want to change employers, the new employer must be accredited and a new job check must be completed. You will need to apply for a new AEWV.
Can I bring my family on an AEWV?
It depends on your wage level and skill level. Workers in ANZSCO skill levels 1-3 earning at least NZD $28.00/hour can support a partner visa. Workers at skill levels 4-5 need to earn at least NZD $52.50/hour to support a partner.
How long does the AEWV process take?
The total process typically takes 1-3 months, depending on the employer accreditation status, job check processing, and individual visa application. Employers with existing accreditation can speed up the process.
Does the AEWV lead to permanent residence?
Not directly. However, AEWV holders can transition to residence through the Green List (if eligible), the Skilled Migrant Category, or the new August 2026 pathways (Skilled Work Experience or Trades & Technician).
What are ANZSCO skill levels?
ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) classifies jobs into 5 skill levels: Level 1 (managers, professionals), Level 2 (associate professionals), Level 3 (technicians, trades), Level 4 (community, personal service), Level 5 (labourers, clerical). Your ANZSCO level affects visa duration and partner eligibility.
