Work Visas & Permits 2026

The UK's Skilled Worker visa requires a minimum salary of £38,700 for most roles. The Global Talent visa offers a sponsor-free route for leaders in tech, academia, and the arts.

Why the UK? Immigration Opportunities for Skilled Workers in 2026

The United Kingdom remains one of the world's most sought-after destinations for skilled professionals. Over 250,000 Skilled Worker visas are granted each year, reflecting persistent demand across healthcare, technology, engineering, and education. Since April 2024, the general salary threshold has risen sharply from £26,200 to £38,700 — or the going rate for the specific occupation, whichever is higher — making it essential that applicants secure well-paying roles before applying. At the same time, the Health & Care Worker visa route was closed to new overseas recruitment from July 2025, significantly tightening one of the most popular pathways. For exceptional individuals, the Global Talent visa provides a sponsor-free route for leaders and emerging talent in digital technology, academia, and the arts — no job offer is required. The UK's points-based immigration system offers a clear path to permanent settlement: after 5 years on most work visas, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and British citizenship becomes available after 6 years. Dependants can work freely, and the Immigration Salary List offers reduced thresholds and fees for shortage roles.

Key Changes 2024–2026 — What You Need to Know

April 2024

General salary threshold raised from £26,200 to £38,700 — a 48% increase. The going rate for each occupation was also recalculated upwards.

April 2024

The Shortage Occupation List (SOL) was abolished and replaced by the Immigration Salary List (ISL), offering a 20% going-rate discount instead of the old 20% general-threshold discount.

April 2024

New entrant salary threshold set at £30,960 (80% of general threshold), applying to applicants under 26, recent graduates, and those in professional training.

July 2025

Health & Care Worker visa route closed to new overseas recruitment. Existing visa holders can still extend and switch, but no new Certificates of Sponsorship are issued for overseas care workers.

2025–2026

A Temporary Shortage List was introduced for occupations with acute, short-term needs — offering time-limited salary concessions while the government addresses domestic training gaps.

The Immigration Salary List (ISL) — Reduced Thresholds for Shortage Roles

The Immigration Salary List (ISL) replaced the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) in April 2024 as part of the UK government's overhaul of the immigration system. Roles on the ISL benefit from a 20% discount on the going rate for the occupation (rather than the general threshold), meaning the minimum salary is typically £30,960 instead of £38,700. In addition, ISL roles attract lower visa application fees. The list is reviewed regularly by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) and includes occupations across multiple sectors where the UK faces persistent recruitment difficulties. Example roles currently on the ISL include: biological scientists, veterinarians, some engineering roles, selected construction trades, and certain healthcare science professionals. If your occupation is on the ISL, your employer may find it significantly easier and cheaper to sponsor you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Working in the UK

What is the minimum salary to get a UK Skilled Worker visa in 2026?
The general salary threshold is £38,700 per year or the going rate for your specific occupation — whichever is higher. New entrants (under 26, recent graduates, or those in professional training) qualify at £30,960. Roles on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) also use a reduced threshold of £30,960. PhD-level occupations require £34,830 (90% of the going rate).
Can I get a UK work visa without a job offer?
Yes — the Global Talent visa does not require a job offer. It is available to leaders and emerging talent in digital technology, academia and research, and arts and culture. You must first obtain an endorsement from a designated competent body (such as Tech Nation for digital technology or UKRI for academia). Once endorsed, you can apply for the visa without any employer sponsor.
How long does it take to get permanent residency (ILR) in the UK?
Most work visa holders can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 continuous years of lawful residence. Global Talent visa holders who are endorsed as 'exceptional talent' (leaders) can apply after 3 years. You must pass the Life in the UK test, meet the English language requirement, and not have spent too long outside the UK during the qualifying period. British citizenship becomes available 12 months after receiving ILR.
What happened to the Health & Care Worker visa?
The Health & Care Worker visa still exists, but since July 2025 it is closed to new overseas recruitment. No new Certificates of Sponsorship are being issued for overseas care workers. Existing visa holders can still extend their visa, switch employers within the UK, and progress toward settlement. The change was introduced to prioritise domestic recruitment in the social care sector.
What is the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)?
The IHS is a mandatory payment that gives visa holders access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS). As of 2026, the rate is £1,035 per year for adults and £776 per year for those under 18, students, and Youth Mobility Scheme participants. The full amount must be paid upfront for the entire visa duration. For a 3-year visa, an adult would pay £3,105 in IHS alone.
What is the Immigration Salary List and how does it differ from the Shortage Occupation List?
The Immigration Salary List (ISL) replaced the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) in April 2024. Both lists identify occupations with UK-wide recruitment shortages, but they differ in how the salary discount works. The old SOL offered a 20% discount on the general salary threshold; the ISL offers a 20% discount on the going rate for the specific occupation. ISL roles also benefit from lower visa application fees. The list is maintained and reviewed by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
