Saudi Arabia Work Visa (Iqama)
The Iqama is Saudi Arabia's mandatory residence and work permit for foreign employees. Employer-sponsored and tied to a specific employer and role.
Overview
The Saudi Iqama (residence permit) is the standard pathway for foreign nationals to work legally in Saudi Arabia. The process is entirely employer-driven: the sponsoring company applies through the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) via the Qiwa digital platform. Saudi Arabia's Saudization policy (Nitaqat system) requires companies to maintain minimum quotas of Saudi nationals, which directly affects visa availability for expatriate workers. As of August 2025, a new skill-based classification system categorizes all work permits into three tiers based on education, experience, salary, accreditation, and age. The Iqama is renewable annually, and following the February 2025 labor reforms, workers now enjoy significantly more mobility -- including the ability to change employers without prior consent under certain conditions. With major mega-projects like NEOM and The Line creating hundreds of thousands of new positions, demand for skilled foreign workers remains high across engineering, IT, healthcare, and construction sectors. Salaries are tax-free at the personal income level, making Saudi Arabia one of the most financially attractive destinations for international professionals.

What is the Iqama renewal process?
Iqama renewal is done annually by the employer through the Absher or Qiwa platform. The employer must pay the renewal fee (SAR 650) and the work permit levy (SAR 9,600/year). The employee must have valid medical insurance and no outstanding violations.
